New to Muskego? Start with the water questions
Muskego publishes no hardness number, and by the utility's own account most residents soften, so a house here likely comes with a softener and a question mark about its setting. A few things are worth finding out early.
Call (262) 829-5961Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pmCorridor or well comes first
Ask the Muskego Water Utility whether it serves the address, or look for its water bill once you move in. A connected house is on one of the corridors; one without a connection draws from its own well, and that decides where every other answer comes from.
The softener already in the house
Find it beside the incoming line, and ask the seller two things: the hardness setting on it, and where that number came from. In a city with no published figure, a setting is only as good as the reading behind it.
If nobody knows, that is fine. Write it down as unknown and mention that on the call. If the house has no softener at all, note that too; it turns the call from a swap into a first-time setup.
On a well of your own
Ask for every lab report on the well, with dates. For a softener, two lines matter, hardness and iron; Waukesha County wells often carry iron along with the hardness.
Bacteria is a separate matter. The Wisconsin DNR wants private wells tested for it yearly, and since softening has no bearing on bacteria or nitrate, that test keeps its own date.
Where the water comes in
Note the room where the incoming line arrives, garage, basement or utility room. A softener stands at that spot, and it has to sit near a drain and a power outlet, which is why the call asks what is there.
Your first quote call
The quote line opens at 7am and closes at 5pm, Monday to Friday. Bring the address, or the fact of a well, plus how many of you live there, where the incoming line arrives, what the current softener is and how it is set, if anyone knows, and any lab numbers. The one price comes during that call. Nobody turns up at the door to sell.
Common questions
The house already has a softener. Do I need a new one?
Maybe not. If it runs, was set from a real reading, and the water is how you want it, keeping it is a fair choice, and the call will say so.
Do I have to test the water before calling?
No. It helps on a well, but the plumber measures hardness at the faucet before any fitting comes apart, and the bacteria test is the one to book either way.
Is a Tess Corners house any different?
Only in where it sits, at the eastern end of the Janesville Road corridor. Corridor or well is still the first question there.
